Ultralite

What is Ultralite™? It is a foamed clay aggregate with “exceptional insulating properties”. Ultralite™ is suitable for use in temperatures up to 1400°C, dependent upon the application.

Ultralite™ B

Made from Ball clay it can be used as a “loose fill insulator” in applications such as kiln car manufacture, or pressed into shapes with a low bulk density when fired. Ultralite™ B is suitable for applications up to 1300°C.

Ultralite™ HT

Can be used in all of the Ultralite™ B applications, but is also available as a raw material for use at higher temperatures up to 1400°C.

The standard grade of both materials is ROK granules. However, both materials can be crushed and graded to customer’s specification whilst still retaining its lightweight characteristics.

This unique material is a real and innovative alternative to Ceramic Fibre.

Just a few of the real benefits of using Ultralite™:

  • It is manufactured by the innovative use of traditional materials via a novel processing route
  • It has - high porosity & low mass which combined within the same material contribute to its “energy saving characteristic” = less energy used within your kiln.
  • It has low permeability = low heat transmission
  • It has low thermal conductivity = excellent insulating properties
  • It has low thermal mass = energy savings in all applications
  • It is lightweight = ease of handling
  • It is free flowing = easy to pour into awkward spaces and reduces construction time
  • It has no ceramic fibre or free silica = “no known health risks”

Ultralite™ can deliver real savings in many ways. For example, when constructing kiln cars it can be conveniently poured into spaces that would require extreme physical packing if using other materials. This results in the kiln car construction time being kept to a minimum.

The low thermal mass of Ultralite™ gives “energy savings on every kiln car fired”, this significantly helps to reduce the energy usage of the facility and thus the Carbon Footprint which is fundamental to the regulations imposed by the Climate Change Levy.
